Code For Sustainable Homes
The Code for Sustainable Homes is the UK standard for the sustainable design and construction of new homes. It aims to improve the sustainability of homes by reducing carbon emissions, pollution, resource consumption, environmental impact as well as improve living standards for occupants.
Assessments are carried out at the ‘Design Stage’ and ‘Post-Construction Stage’. They provide a rating for homes based on a credit system across the following aspects:
- Energy/CO2
- Water
- Materials
- Surface water runoff (flooding and flood prevention)
- Waste
- Pollution
- Health and well-being
- Management
- Ecology
Increasingly, local authorities now require planning applications to be accompanied by a Code for Sustainable Homes assessment for both new build and refurbishment projects.
